Water Treatment – Cooling Towers
The practice of using cooling towers to transfer heat from water used in applications such as air conditioning and the cooling of manufacturing equipment is widespread throughout the world. The circulating water picks up heat from the process and then passes through a cooling tower releasing the heat through evaporation. As a result of evaporation the water becomes concentrated with dissolved solids which can cause scaling and the water itself can become biologically fouled. Scaling and biological fouling is detrimental to the life and efficiency of the cooling system.
To battle scaling and biological fouling, Stenner peristaltic metering pumps are used extensively to meter corrosion inhibitors such as polyphosphates and biocides such as chlorine and bromine. Some applications also require the addition of sulfuric or hydrochloric acid to maintain pH control. It is general practice to use water treatment controllers to automate activation of Stenner peristaltic pumps to maintain the water chemistry balance required for efficient operation of the cooling tower system.
Examples of installations include hospitals, schools, hotels, condominiums, commercial, industrial buildings, and power plants.
